340B
The 340B Drug Pricing Program at Poverello is a US federal government program that requires drug manufacturers to provide outpatient drugs to eligible health care organizations and covered entities like us at significantly reduced prices. Poverello is now a covered entity.
Eligible organizations include:
- Hospitals
- Community health centers
- Ryan White HIV/AIDS programs
- Public health clinics*
- Children’s hospitals
- Schools
- Tribal organizations
- Indian Health Service facilities
To participate in the program, an organization must first be certified by the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA). Once certified, the organization can purchase 340B drugs from pharmaceutical manufacturers. The discounts can be as high as 50% off the list price.
340B drugs can be dispensed to patients at the participating organization or at a contract pharmacy. Contract pharmacies are retail pharmacies that have agreed to dispense 340B drugs to patients of participating organizations.
The 340B program has helped millions of patients access affordable prescription drugs. In 2020, the program saved patients an estimated $3.1 billion.
Here are some of the benefits of the 340B program:
- Helps patients afford prescription drugs
- Allows covered entities to stretch scarce federal resources
- Expands access to health care services
- Supports community health
If you are a patient who is eligible for the 340B program, talk to your doctor or health care provider to see if you can get your prescription drugs through a participating organization.
Here are some additional details about the 340B program:
- The program is funded by pharmaceutical manufacturers.
- The discounts are based on the list price of the drug.
- The program is not available to all health care organizations.
- There are some restrictions on how the discounts can be used.
The 340B program is a valuable resource for many patients and health care organizations. It helps to make prescription drugs more affordable and accessible, which can improve health outcomes and reduce costs.
